Maybe I shouldn’t be so compelled to talk about my financial investments and strategies. At first I thought it was pretty harmless, but then I felt exposed. A friend kept asking and making judgements about my financial maneuvering. Now, suddenly I realize I want more of a non disclosure policy.

If you want people to think what you think, you can’t say what you think.

Someone mentioned this in a lecture today and I thought it was very profound. The idea behind this quote is that when we want to let someone know ‘what’s on our mind’, the most intuitive tact would be to gather our thoughts and say clearly and slowly, with emphasis, what we think.

The recipient of our message then interprets it differently and our message is lost.

The suggested tact would be to ask questions so that your recipient comes to ‘what you’re thinking’ on their own. Yes, Socrates figured it out a long time ago.

The paradox of choice

Does having a lot of options really provide that much of an advantage? Is it about having options or learning to spot the right one? I’m inclined to go with the latter. Somehow I feel that you can spend the rest of your life waiting for the next ‘better’ option; you’ll forever be calculating, undecided, holding your breath, and strategizing. And maybe that’s something we all have to go through, but at some point it seems like you have to make a decision. Once you’ve seen the show and the players, at some point it feels better to stop waiting and start living. As ‘clever’ as it sounds to keep your options open and free, do people realize the opportunity cost of being hesitant?Waiting for a better option, as much as you’d like to think you’re maximizing your chances, you also giving up a certain level of efficacy. Was life meant for the waiting? or the taking?

A year later and not too much has changed. The same goals, wishes, and desires still intact. At least there’s reliability in the things you want :-p It’s refreshing to know that there’s a certain level of stability amidst constant change; as much as things have changed in the past 365 days including living conditions, geographical location, relationship status etc…the same goals and internal push that was driving me then, continues to propel me now. Fundamentally, things aren’t that different. Hmm.

I passed comps today

My professors made it rigorous on purpose and while it may have been uncomfortable during the session, you walk away with a sense of validation. Anything worthwhile is always earned.

Surface cause and getting real

Problems are easily, if not instinctively, attributed to surface causes. Perhaps its the self mechanism for preservation. However, to be free, its important to be real.

A lot of my own problems are not because of the situation – although the situation plays a huge part. Its not the location, distance, time, or what not – its really about me.
